September 15, 2016 By admin

What is the North Pole Experience?
Votenorth-pole-experience-6d “Best Holiday Experience for Children” by Arizona Foothills Magazine readers in 2016, the North Pole Experience™ (NPX) is the critically acclaimed Santa Experience located in the idyllic and breath-taking
resort ski/summer destination of Flagstaff, AZ.
A Christmas Adventure of a Lifetime, the North Pole Experience(NPX) starts by taking families on a trolley ride through the magic portal to Santa’s massive workshop in the middle of the forest.      Once you arrive, Santa’s Workshop is a complete, hands-on experience for children and parents.   Families work side-by-side with the elves, north-pole-experience-3building toys and learning all of Santa’s Workshop secrets.    They receive access to Santa’s main factory floor with soaring toy slides and ceilings, attend Elf University, visit with Mrs. Claus and enjoy cookies and snowman soup in the bakery. Don’t forget Santa’s mail room, his personal office, and his top-secret “Area 47” Sleigh Hangar, featuring his famous sleigh, mission control center, radar systems and more. Families end the approx. 1 hour and 35 minute workshop experience with a private family visit with Santa.

Lake Powell

September 5, 2016 By admin

Lake Powell - Antelope CanyonThe second largest man-made lake in the United States is the playground for Page, Arizona and nearly three million visitors annually. Lake Powell is 186 miles long and has 1,960 miles of shoreline, which is longer than the entire west coast of the continental United States. There are 96 major canyons to explore though you’ll need a water craft for the majority of them since access is limited because there are few roads.

Boats and PWC’s can be rented from businesses in Page and at each of four marinas with tour boat cruises—from one hour up to seven hours—offered year round at Wahweap and Bull Frog marinas. Dangling Rope Marina is only accessible by boat and is 3/4 of the distance from Wahweap Marina to Rainbow Bridge National Monument.

IMG_5760Other lake activities include swimming, fishing, scuba diving, snorkeling, water skiing, hiking and sightseeing. Photographic opportunities abound. You can even take a scenic flight by plane or helicopter over the lake, which provides a bird’s eye view of how far some those 96 canyons extend from the main channel

Around early June, the lake’s waters begin to warm and stay that way well into October with a clarity unrivaled in other fresh water lakes. While the climate is arid and humidity is generally less than 40 percent, Lake Powell is classified as a “high desert” area due to it’s 3,700 ft. elevation. Water temperatures cool significantly in the winter then rise into the high 70’s in the summer. When it does snow at Lake Powell, the contrast of the white against red-rock cliffs and azure blue waters makes for beautiful photographs and memories.

Lava River Cave (Lava Tube)

September 4, 2016 By admin

IMG_7624Lava River Cave is a lava tube cave in northern Arizona’s Coconino National Forest. At approximately 0.75-mile long, it is the longest cave of this kind known in Arizona. The cave was discovered by some lumbermen in 1915.
Address: Forest Road 171, Flagstaff, AZ 86001
Phone: (928) 526-0866
Management: United States Forest Service
DIRECTIONS: From Flagstaff, go northwest on US 180 to mile marker 230 (9 miles). Turn left (W) on FR 245 and follow it 3.6 miles to its intersection with FR 171. Turn left (S) on FR 171 and go 1.0 miles to FR 171B. Follow this .25 miles until its end. The cave entrance is 300 yards east of the end of the road. Look for a large circle of rocks that mark the cave entrance.

Coconino-Lava-River-Cave-3

*Important for your safety* This hike will take you 3/4 (1.5 mi round trip) of a mile underground. Take 2 sources of light per person, one for backup in case the other fails.

The cave floor is very rocky and uneven, sturdy shoes/boots are a good idea and the temperatures of the cave range between 35 and 45 degrees summer and winter so dress appropriatly.
This very unusual hike will take you down a 700,000 year old lava tube discovered by lumbermen around 1915.

Horseshoe Bend

August 26, 2016 By admin

Horseshoe Bend is located about four miles south of Page, Arizona on Hwy 89, one should look out for a small brown signboard that reads “Horseshoe Bend Overlook”. It’s easy to miss this signboard, so one has to closely look out for it.  If you are heading south from Page, there is a signboard on the right side of Hwy 89 and new turn lane that marks your exit. Make a turn westwards at the signboard, and in less than a quarter of a mile the road should end at a small dirt parking lot. Because this location is unknown to most tourists to the Glen Canyon Recreation Area, the parking lot usually has plenty of empty spots. From the parking lot, the overlook is 3/4 of a mile away. There is a well marked trail that leads to the overlook. However, the trail consists mostly of loose desert sand and it can be a very strenous hike. So carry lots of water or other fluids.

DSC_0300As you walk down the trail, loose desert sand gives way to sandstone rocks that date back to the early Jurassic period. Over millions of years, wind and water have eroded these rocks to create absolutely weird, but awe inspiring shapes and patterns.

Upon reaching the overlook, one is awed by the magnificence of the landscape that cannot be expressed in words or through a photograph. The overlook is at the top of a steep orange colored cliff several hundreds of feet high. Down below, an emerald green Colorado river makes a horse-shoe shaped bend before rushing towards the Grand Canyon.

Antelope (Slot) Canyon

August 26, 2016 By admin

Antelope Canyon is located near Page, Arizona on Navajo Nation land, just outside the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and close to AZ 98 a few miles east of town (at milepost 299). Antelope is the most visited slot canyon in the Southwest, partly because it Plato Family - Antelope Canyon (1 of 1)is easily accessible and by far the most publicized, and also since it is extremely beautiful, with just the right combination of depth,
width, length, rock color and ambient light; many other slot canyons are deeper, narrower or longer, and some have rock that is even more
colorful and sculptured, but here conditions are ideal.

Page is located approximately 2 hours to the North of Flagstaff and is a great place to visit for either a day trip or overnight trip.  There are a number of things to see and do in the vicinity.  Be sure to take a tour of Antelope Slot Canyon and don’t miss a photo opportunity at Horseshoe Bend.  A boat tour of Lake Powell is nice as well!
